India’s Crypto Economy Reaches $340 Billion in Annual Inflows, OECD Data Shows

India’s $338 Billion Crypto Volume: Why On Chain Intelligence Is Now Essential

India’s crypto activity has reached a scale that can no longer be understood only through domestic exchange records.

Chainalysis estimates that India received approximately $338 billion in on chain crypto value between July 2024 and June 2025, making India the largest crypto market in the Asia Pacific region by value received. India’s estimated on chain volume grew 99 percent year on year, effectively doubling within twelve months.

The OECD’s Asia Capital Markets Report 2026 independently uses Chainalysis data and confirms that India and Korea recorded the largest absolute crypto asset inflows in Asia during the twelve months to June 2025. OECD Figure 5.2 compares these blockchain based inflows against 2025 GDP using IMF data. On that basis, India’s $338 billion annual crypto inflow is equivalent to roughly 8.5 to 9 percent of India’s annual GDP.

This figure must be understood correctly. $338 billion is not the amount of cryptocurrency stored in Indian wallets.

It is the estimated value of crypto assets received on chain during a twelve month period. A crypto asset may move multiple times, so transaction volume cannot be treated as wealth, investment holdings, revenue or taxable income.

How Chainalysis Calculates India’s Crypto Volume The $338 billion figure is not based simply on transaction data supplied by Indian crypto exchanges.

Chainalysis begins with public blockchain information. Public blockchains record transfers between addresses. Blockchain analytics can identify addresses associated with centralised exchanges, decentralised protocols and other crypto services and measure the value moving through those addresses.

The difficult part is determining which country the activity belongs to. Chainalysis explains that it estimates countries’ crypto transaction volumes by combining on chain transaction information with geographic indicators including web traffic patterns associated with crypto services and protocols.

In simplified form: Public blockchain transactions → crypto service identification → geographic attribution → estimated Indian user activity → total on chain value received

The methodology covers hundreds of millions of cryptocurrency transactions and more than 13 billion web visits used in the geographic estimation process.

Chainalysis itself acknowledges an important limitation. VPNs and similar technologies can make geographic attribution imperfect.

The company therefore describes country level transaction figures as estimates, not equivalent to audited government statistics.

That qualification is essential when using the $338 billion number. OECD Independently Places India at the Top of Asian Crypto Inflows The OECD 2026 report provides particularly important confirmation because it does not merely discuss crypto adoption rankings.

It examines financial inflows into blockchain based crypto assets. The OECD states that Asia recorded a 69 percent year on year increase in blockchain based crypto asset transactions through June 2025, the highest growth rate among all global regions. Within Asia, India and Korea recorded the largest absolute inflows.

OECD Figure 5.2 specifically measures: Financial inflows into blockchain based crypto assets from June 2024 to June 2025 and compares those inflows against: 2025 nominal GDP using IMF World Economic Outlook data. India appears at the extreme upper end of the OECD chart in absolute dollar terms.

That makes the approximately 9 percent of GDP comparison significant. It does not mean crypto represents 9 percent of India's economy.

Rather, it means that the estimated annual value of blockchain based crypto assets flowing to Indian users was equivalent in size to roughly 9 percent of one year of Indian GDP.

Those are fundamentally different concepts. India Is Also Number One Across Every Chainalysis Adoption Category The volume data are reinforced by the Chainalysis 2025 Global Crypto Adoption Index.

India ranked number one globally overall and also ranked number one individually for: Retail centralised crypto activity Total centralised service activity DeFi activity Institutional centralised crypto activity The important point is not simply India's ranking.

India's crypto activity is visible across retail, institutional, centralised and decentralised channels simultaneously. This makes exchange level data only one component of the Indian crypto economy.

Why $338 Billion Makes On Chain Intelligence Critical A conventional exchange database can show transactions occurring within that exchange. It may identify: customer identity crypto purchases crypto sales deposits withdrawals and transfers from the platform.

But once assets leave an exchange and enter a private wallet, the financial activity can continue.

For example: Indian exchange → self custody wallet → USDT → decentralised exchange → another blockchain → lending protocol → second wallet → offshore exchange The original exchange may see the withdrawal.

It does not necessarily see the entire economic journey afterwards. The blockchain does.

That distinction becomes increasingly important when India is dealing with approximately $338 billion in estimated annual on chain value received.

On chain intelligence can provide visibility into transaction flows involving: stablecoins self custody wallets DEX transactions staking crypto lending bridges P2P transfers offshore exchanges and movements between identified services.

India's scale therefore makes on chain intelligence essential for accurately understanding the country's crypto economy.

One Number Changes the Entire Debate India is not dealing with a small experimental crypto market.

The verified data show: $338 billion estimated on chain crypto value received in twelve months 99 percent annual growth largest absolute crypto inflow market in Asia alongside Korea according to OECD roughly 8.5 to 9 percent of annual GDP in equivalent transaction value number one globally across every Chainalysis adoption category The $338 billion figure should therefore not be interpreted merely as a crypto trading statistic.

It represents the scale of a financial network operating across centralised exchanges, decentralised protocols, stablecoins, private wallets and cross border blockchain infrastructure.

At this level of activity, exchange reporting alone cannot describe the entire Indian crypto ecosystem.

India increasingly requires the capability to understand the blockchain itself.

Traditional reporting tells authorities what an intermediary records. On chain intelligence reveals how value actually moves across the crypto network.
